What is black obsidian? 

Of all the crystals, black obsidian may form in the most unique way. This rock forms from cooling magma after a volcanic eruption (its origins make it a fitting stone to carve dildos from).

• Although typically jet black, different colors can form in obsidian, which is thought to happen due to molten lava cooling at different rates.
• Obsidian was given its name after a Roman citizen/explorer, Obsius, who “discovered” it in Ethiopia.
• Obsidian knives were used for ritual circumcisions in ancient Egypt as well as human sacrifices during the Aztec civilization.
• Mayan shamans used black obsidian mirrors for divination purposes.
